October is National Marine Month, an ideal time to pause and consider the ocean's many benefits.
Hollard Marine, a specialist insurance division within Hollard Insure, is acutely aware of how important our oceans are – both from environmental and commercial perspectives.
"Our oceans are what makes the Earth a 'blue planet'. Their influence on climate to their role in providing us with food is vital to the sustainability of humans around the globe," says Bala Viranna, Senior Business Development Manager at Hollard Marine. "We should not forget that about 80% of all goods that are traded are transported by sea.
“It is our duty to sustain the oceans that sustain us – even if we live a long way from the coast. By properly disposing of waste (especially plastics), demanding sustainably sourced fish on our plates, managing water usage and supporting responsible business practices, we can all do our part to save the oceans.”
As one of several contributions to ocean health and awareness, Hollard Marine participates in National Marine Month with various initiatives, such as our recent beach clean-up or thought leadership articles that provide awareness of the plight of seafarers and the maritime operations during the pandemic.
We’re good sports! Hollard Marine’s sponsorship of Hollard Jacana, one of the country's leading racing yachts and teams, celebrates the recreational joy the ocean brings.
During the recent Intasure Spring Regatta in False Bay, Hollard Jacana crew member Claire Heginbotham took a video of activities aboard the yacht as it competed in the bay's sparkling waters.
Sustainable activities include recognising and insuring against risks on the water. Says Viranna: "If you plan to spend some time on the water this holiday season, we challenge you to remember #MarineMonth2021 and actively find ways to exchange your carbon footprint for simple footprints on the sand."
