South Africa faces a crisis on our roads – a heartbreaking number of fatalities every year. Hollard Highway Heroes, a transformative annual competition, was created to directly confront this crisis. We shine a spotlight on exceptional truck drivers, the unsung heroes who navigate our highways with extraordinary skill and responsibility.
These drivers are more than just trucking professionals; they represent the very best of the transport industry. They are the ones who go above and beyond to deliver their cargo safely and on time, while also prioritising the well-being of fellow road users. Through recognising and rewarding these remarkable drivers, we aim to improve road safety across South Africa and reduce the number of tragic accidents on our roads.
The 2024 competition is now closed. The 2024 Highway Heroes competition ran from 01 April 2024 and closed on 31 May 2024. Watch out for the 2025 call for entries.
Hollard Highway Heroes, an annual competition that celebrates conscientious driving, celebrated a fleet of drivers this year at their Hollard Highway Heroes finale event at Emperors Palace in Gauteng on November 24.
Drivers Phineas Muhlanga from Reef Tankers and Gobatlamang J. Gabonewe from Megabus Kuruman were honoured as winners during the event.

We’re proud to be a driving force behind WIWIT – Women Inspiring Women to Lead in Transport. This impactful programme champions a future where women truck drivers have the skills and opportunities to thrive within the transport industry. For far too long, this sector has presented women with an uphill battle, despite the fact that they often demonstrate safer driving habits than their male counterparts. At Hollard, we’re passionate about rewriting this narrative, and clearing the road for women to excel.
Hollard's trucking division has thrown its full support behind WIWIT's mission. We've sponsored two state-of-the-art training truck trailers, equipped two training centres with 10 laptops each, and opened up access to Hollard's comprehensive e-learning platform, equipping aspiring women truck drivers with the tools and knowledge they need for success. But this is only the start. As WIWIT grows and evolves, we're committed to playing an active role in shaping a transport industry where skilled women truck drivers and inspirational women leaders are not the exception, but the norm.
Visit the Commercial Transport Academy (CTA) website for more information about their comprehensive driver learnership programmes.
The Hollard Trucking Driver Rewards Card Programme recognises and rewards exceptional drivers for consistently safe and responsible driving. We track performance based on a set of predetermined driving and safety criteria.
Every time your drivers earn a reward, it’s loaded onto a personalised, pre-paid MasterCard, conveniently sent directly to you. Your drivers then have the freedom to use their reward cards at any MasterCard partner across South Africa and enjoy the well-deserved rewards of their hard work and dedication.
Hollard is a proud partner of the Safer Stops Association, championing safer and more supportive environments for truck drivers across South Africa. This partnership embodies our proactive approach, connecting us with truck stop owners, government officials and key influencers within the logistics industry.
Our collaboration has two core aims. First, to expand and enhance the resources available at existing truck stops – improving driver comfort, safety and overall well-being. Secondly, to serve as a catalyst for positive change and help shape the future growth and development of the truck stop sector, creating a more sustainable, driver-centric environment.
This year marks a decade of impact for the Hollard Risk Services Bureau. For ten years, we’ve diligently monitored high-risk driving behaviour, playing a vital role in making South Africa's roads safer. Our Bureau operates with two core functions: a 24/7 live monitoring function via 20+ cutting-edge telemetry systems and reporting functions, which provide daily, weekly and monthly analysis on bad driving behaviours.
We currently monitor over 6,000 trucks, with over 40,000 high-risk alarms – such as impact alerts, battery disconnects, jamming alerts and panic alarms - detected every month. We translate data into action, making approximately 3,500 calls per month to address potential issues and mitigate risks proactively.
