So, you’ve had the same sports car poster on your wall since you were 6 and now want the real thing? Or, maybe you’ve seen a new car model out on the road and you think you’d look great in it? Should you buy it, or should you get insurance quotes first? Forget ‘To be or not to be’, THAT is the question!
If you’re struggling with trying to answer that question, we’re here to help. We have a short guide for you that will help you clear up any grey areas in this regard.
Tips for Owning Your Dream Car and Insuring It, Too
1. Get insurance quotes first
Simply put; you can’t have your dream car without insuring it. If you’ve spent a lifetime (or at least a few years, to be less dramatic) saving to buy your ultimate set of wheels, you definitely don’t want to risk losing it to theft, natural damage, or an accident.
So, insurance is an absolute, no-getting-around-it, must-have!
Before buying that vehicle you have your covetous eye on, contact a few insurers and get some solid insurance quotes. If you find out that you can get enough cover and still come in under budget, great! Go get those keys and pop the bubbly!
But, if you find out that the insurance and vehicle payments will be too much for your budget to handle, you might have to make other plans. Fortunately, we have a couple of ideas for you on this front, too. These are…
2. See if you can raise your excess
Don’t give up on your dream just yet. You might be able to adjust your insurance quotes to suit your budget.
One example of this would be to raise your excess. Some insurers will offer more reasonable premiums if you agree to pay a higher excess (just be sure that you have enough savings to do this).
A great place to start is by talking to insurance companies, telling them all about the car you want and your budget, and seeing what they can do for you. You might still be popping that bubbly pretty soon!
3. See if you can get a different model
If it turns out that you can’t afford your dream mobile and the insurance to cover it, you don’t have to give up on life and go into an Edgar Allan Poe-like depression. You might be able to have the vehicle you so desire if you sacrifice a few features.
Some vehicle brands ditch a few added features and offer the same(ish) car for a lower price. Check to see if there is a slightly more affordable option that fits into your budget. So, if you can do without the self-cleaning waffle station on the dashboard and the LCD screens on the hubcaps, you might still be able to drive off into the sunset, completely insured, in your ultimate car.
